Why is my check engine light on and the engine sputters on a 97 powerstroke?
Check engine light is on and the engine sputters like it is not getting enough fuel. What could be wrong?

that could be any one of a half dozen sensors. you’ll have to take it in to have it analyzed.
They shouldn’t have put stupid electronics on diesels.
Fuel pump pressure
Fuel pump filter
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel pump
Many possibilities if it was that easy there would be a lot of technicians without jobs.
However a very common problem with the power stroke is the valve cover gasket has a what is called a pass through wiring connector, this is where power is wired to the injectors and the glow plugs. The connector gets brittle inside the valve cover from heat and the connector becomes partially disconnected causing one or more injectors not to fire .
A engine code will have to be retrieved which if this is the problem will give you an injector no. or no.s. that are the cause, that will help you indicate which side is loose
the valve cover will have to come off and possibly replacement of the valve cover gasket and securing of the connector to repair
But it can be many other possibilities .
The first step will be to retrieve the engine codes and go from there
egr cooler? injector? ICP connector?
like the one guy said they never should have put electronics on diesels they took the best engines on the face of the planet (short of jets) and made them wishy washy at times. that being said it needs to be code scaned there are tons of things that could be malfunctioning
