What To Look For When Considering a Used Engine

Used engines have become increasingly popular choices for consumers during the recent difficult economic times, as people have come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make sense to spend thousands of dollars on unnecessary things in their lives. Unfortunately, cars are essential parts of daily life for most people, and when a car engine fails, it is rarely possible to simply continue on with life until you replace that engine.
However, the costs of buying brand new engines, especially when they are designed to go into old vehicles, can be quite prohibitive, and not everyone has the money available to replace old engines in old cars with new engines. This is where used engines can be advantageous. There are large numbers of used engine suppliers who carry various used engines. If you’re need a Mazda 3 engine or a Nissan engine or a used Mercury engine, you can probably find one without too much trouble, and save thousands of dollars purchasing one of these used instead of buying a brand new engine from one of auto makers. This article will provide you with information of things to look for and keep in mind when next you find yourself considering a used engine. Remember: in the end, all cars run on used parts once you drive them off the lot.
Perhaps the first thing to keep in mind when considering a used engine is the mileage of your current engine. Ideally, the used engine you buy to replace your current engine should have fewer miles on it than the engine it is replacing. If you have a Nissan engine with 100,000 miles and it stops working due to a blown head gasket or a split fuse, you should make every effort to replace it with an engine with fewer than 100,000 miles. The only time you should buy a used engine with more miles than the engine you are replacing it with is if you can verify the history of the used engine and have it checked out and see that it is in very good condition.
However, if you have a premature engine failure very early on (say, within the first 50,000 miles of driving your Mercury car), it is fine for your used Mercury engine to have more miles on it than your original engine. Similarly, if you’re broke and your Mazda 3 engine starts knocking pistons, it is okay to buy a used engine with more miles on it than your original Mazda engine.
However, make sure it has either already been thoroughly inspected by an experienced mechanic or you call such a mechanic to inspect the engine before you have it installed in your car. You will want to make sure, first and foremost, that the engine will be compatible with your vehicle, your transmission and electrical systems, and that it will actually fit inside your car.
