What engines will fit as a replacement engine for a 1999 jeep wrangler?
My coworkers 1999 Jeep Wranglers engine blew and she wants to replace the engine. It currently has a 2.5 engine. Is it only replacable with a jeep wrangler 2.5 engine. Would any chrysler 2.5 engine fit or from a cherokee. any other engines? it would need to fit without a crazy amount of modification. ive heard jeep motor mounts are very specific and only lineup with specific engines please let me know if you know anything thanks
You should be able to fit any one of the engines that came in the car that year in the car with the correct cross bar and motor mounts. These engines include: 2.5 L AMC 150 I4, 4.0 L AMC 242 I6. As you can expect the 2.5 L would be the easiest install. You may be able to fing the motor mounts you need at a local junk yard. Installing any new engine would be difficult. The only wory I have is you might run into problems with the accesories.
The Jeep 2.5 4 cylinder was produced from the early eighties until 2006. Unless you are a mechanical wizard you need to replace the engine block assembly with a similar year Jeep 2.5. The manifolds and external accessories can be reused in order to ensure compatibility. Since the 99 is a fuel injected, computer controlled car you will be biting off a big chunk of trouble if you stray far from the original. Some common swaps for this vehicle are to the six cylinder 4.0 Jeep, which means you need a complete engine wiring harness and computer and a bit of fitting and fabricating. Also a swap using the venerable Chevrolet 350 crate engine is available in a kit form but could run several thousand dollars for the entire kit.
