Craftsman 2 stage snowblower with 5hp engine.
Stalls when choke is opened… works fine when choke is closed.
Starts easily with choke closed and no smoke.

How can I fix this? Thank you

Peobably to lean on the gas mixture on carb or too rich on oxygen screw.Adjust it while its running.

  2. RUAQT? says:

Carb should be cleaned, change fuel filter/gas pickup tube in tank. (Depends on which carb setup you have.) Make sure fuel is turned on,and vent hole in cap is open.

If it runs with choke and after a warm up of a few minutes will not run without the choke, the gas flow is restricted to the jets in the carburator. Clean the carburator jet(s). I don’t think this has a filter in the gas line, but if it does, change the filter. Usually, on a small engine when this happens, it is simply a dirty gas can, one with rust inside, or one which picked up some debris somehow. There really isn’t much which can go wrong on a small engine like this one. I doubt that the jets need adjusting, but if all else fails, you could adjusting the jets to increase the gas flow, but adjustment is a last resort. It is MUCH more likely to be dirt in the gas line.

A few easy things to check:
Make sure fuel is fresh (if it sat all year in tank it needs to be replaced).
Change fuel filter. (if it is a couple of years old give it a full tune-up including air filter, new oil and new spark plug).
Add a little ‘dry gas’ . this removes moisture and prevents freeze-ups.
As one other person said check gas cap for proper ventilation (it may be iced up or full of dirt.

    Hope this helps,

bear45fl has same answer i would’ve gave. 25 years experience landscaping, and snow removal, and working on the equipment.

  6. RUSS says:

SOUNDS LIKE A FUEL PROBLEM. REMOVE FUEL LINE AT CARB. IF FUEL RUNS OUT OF HOSE AT THAT POINT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE CARB. iF NOT THEN THE FUEL FILTER LOCATED IN THE LINE BETWEEN TANK AND CARB IS IN QUESTION. iF NO IN LINE FILTER PRESENT THEN CHECK THE FILTER LOCATED IN TANK.

  7. petasucks101 says:

TAKE FUEL BOWL OFF AND CLEAN. SHOOT SOME CARB CLEANER IN WHERE BOWL SITS. TAKE OFF AIR CLEANER AND GET IT STARTED. ONCE RUNNING SHOOT SOME CARB CLEANER IN AND AROUND CHOKE(DONT USE TOO MUCH OR YOU CAN GRENADE ENGINE)
