I think My valves are bent and my engine doesnt start. Can I still check the compression with a cold engine or does my engine have to be warm?

YOUR ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE ON

For an accurate compression reading, the motor should be warm.

To see if you have total loss in one or more cylinders, you can remove the spark plugs and block the throttle wide open. Now spin the motor over using the starter until you build oil pressure (at least 10 seconds). Now hook up your compression gauge to the first cylinder and spin the motor over again. Relieve the pressure, install on the next cylinder and spin the motor. Repeat.

This will tell you if you have a total loss on a cylinder. Doing a lieakdown test on the cylinder will tell you where the leak is (valve, rings, ect)
