How much would it cost to get an engine and transmission installed in a 1968 Mustang?

I’m looking at buying a ‘68 Mustang that comes without an engine or tranny. Everything on the car is in great condition. What would be the cheapest engine to go with (this car will be a first car and I don’t have alot of money)? What’s the going rate to get an engine or tranny installed in a car like this? Thanks!

the 1968 would be a classic car. those are really expensive to maintain and not for some1 looking to buy a first car.

Also repairs and maintenance are extremely costly and will cost you a ton of money. I would strongly advise you save your money and buy something that is about 8 years old!

just do it yourself. live and learn. get a 302 out of a t bird or 5.0 mustang with FI just get someone to help that knows about cars. Make sure it runs good And dont cut ANY wires when pulling the engine. not that hard to install or pull engines just take your time and it will be a TON cheaper.

Shops get $500 to remove and replace a engine, but a custom engine installation can cost a bunch at $80 a hour. Look for a used engine and trans from somebody upgrading their stock early Mustang, that would be the cheapest way to go.

You don’t buy something like this and pay SOMEONE ELSE to maintain it and work on it unless you have “throwaway” money. Your “I don’t have a lot of money” is a clue.

You need to do the work yourself. Rent a hoist and put your own engine and transmission in. Need tools too… other stuff…

For my mustang I picked up a C4 for $50 that worked great, the torque converter another $25. You should be able to pick up a good 302 for a couple of hundred. THEN join your local Mustang club for the technical help and incidentals you’ll need. With that you’ll be on the road to total joy and satisfaction.
