How does a company do engine testing when it develops a new engine?

Does it drive them in the vehicles for many miles or do they just test them on an engine stand for a while? Just curious it this entails actual driving of the vehicle it is going into… For example, 2010 Ford SHO, how would they test the engine longevity or theoretically, can they?
Such as testing the longevity of the turbo set-up. How do they know it won’t start getting runaway?

First its tested on a computer (no real parts). Once it passes that they will build engines for real life testing. Some of those engines will be put into cars called test mules where it will be driven on test tracks and streets. Others will be tested in a lab on a dyno.

they do this in many ways they will build a motor and run it straight for many many hours at a relatively high rpm to simulate a worst case senario. they also do computer diognostics of engine oil wear, coolant conditions, even effects on emmissions systems. lastly the test motor gets torn down to the bare parts and diognosed for wear conditions, they exam it better than any doctor you are likely to ever meet as they are expected to find flaws, period thats their job. they have had that motor on the test system for likely 5 years in developemnent. if that number suprises you keep in mind todays modern fighter jet began on a computer drawing board in the 80’s. also yes they do run a test mule with the engine though they tend to be sneaky about these things due to spying eyes. the motor could have been fitted in a pick up truck or some odd model car such as the 500 model be comforted that they cant afford to release a lemon engine to the public due to lemon laws etc.
