How can the check engine light codes on a 2004 Mazda3?

Yes I can use an OBDII scanner, but that’s not what I mean. Other cars can check their engine codes by counting the number of blinks of the check engine light after a specific key on/off cycle.
Can Mazdas do this? More specifically the Mazda3?

all 96 and newer cars are OBD 2 VEHICLES or CAN systems on even newer vehicles , these cars 96 and newer can only have the codes extracted with a code reader or a scanner. only some of the older 95 and older cars ( obd1 ) could you get the codes by counting the blinks after doing a splice in the computer system . you cant count blinks on a 2004 mazda .

i know what you are talking about, in protege you have to plug the ten pin with the second pin and turn the key

engine light with start blinking, but i dont know if this works for new mazda 3 i guess it dont work because engine in bigger than protege and ecu is also different
